Principal, Plastic Pollution Solutions
Lia Colabello launched Plastic Pollution Solutions to advise organizations on strategies to reduce their global plastic footprint. With more than 12 years’ experience with ocean conservation groups such as The 5 Gyres Institute and Surfrider Foundation, Lia has helped organizations including Costa Sunglasses, Shedd Aquarium, Aquarium Conservation Partnership, Klean Kanteen, LUSH Cosmetics and Whole Foods engage in marine plastics solution initiatives, both internally, and with their communities.
Prior to working in ocean conservation, Lia worked around the world with premier sports organizations and events, including the PGA TOUR, Ryder Cup, the Super Bowl, and the World Surf League. Originally from the North Shore of O’ahu in Hawaii, Lia attended the University of Southern California, where she played varsity water polo and graduated with degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Anthropology. She has an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. She lives in Charleston, SC and loves to explore the ocean and waterways around the Lowcountry with her family.

Plastic is non-biodegradable. Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic – or five bags filled with plastic covering every foot of coastline in the world – ends up in our oceans. This session will explore how this situation can be remedied and what the repercussions of inaction are.
